About The Event

Have fun playing with colour and texture while enjoying the creative process of weaving! In this beginner's weaving workshop you will learn how to warp a frame loom, various simple weaving stitches plus helpful tips to create your wall hanging.

Danielle supplies a gorgeous array of materials to work with during the workshop including high quality yarns and roving in a range of colours, hand dyed and hand spun yarns, raffia, soft cotton ropes, plus a wooden dowel and cord for hanging your finished piece. (If you have a specific colour palette in mind, you are more than welcome to bring your own yarns or weaving materials along as well).

Weaving takes time and there is no pressure to rush your piece as you get a weaving kit to keep - including a handcrafted Midnight Weave Co small loom (33cm x 25cm), needles, a ball of chunky warp thread, a weaving comb and a shed stick (valued at $120). This means you can weave at your own pace and enjoy the process.

Danielle will explain how to finish off and hang your woven wall hanging before the end of the workshop. She also supplies a comprehensive PDF instruction booklet to download at home. The booklet includes beginners stitches such as tabby, soumak, rya knots and ways to work with soft merino roving.

Workshop sessions run from 10:30am - 3:30pm with a maximum of 8 students.

Afternoon tea is provided (please advise if you have any dietary requirements) plus feel free to bring along snacks and a water bottle for yourself.

Workshops are run from Danielle's Fremantle Studio located at:

About the Teacher:

Danielle Stewart is a Fremantle-based fibre artist working under the label Midnight Weave Co, who specializes in weaving on frame looms. With a background in textile surface design, she discovered weaving was the perfect creative outlet for her once she became a Mum and she would weave once her boys were in bed.

These days she enjoys the process more than ever and gets immense satisfaction out of creating her work. She prefers to use natural fibres and has developed a keen interest in natural dyeing using plants. She is captivated by the magical process of extracting dye from nature and the living colour these dyes create on fibres. Her plant dyed yarns and rope add another dimension to her woven pieces.

She loves sharing the process of weaving with others and seeing the enjoyment her students get from creating their own unique woven pieces.

Danielle runs an Etsy shop where she sells her woven wall hangings and weaving supplies (including specially selected yarns and fibres). She has also designed her own range of weaving looms and tools.
